Unleashing Student Potential: The Mastery Approach to Learning
Introduction:
In our latest podcast, we explore the idea of mastery learning a proven approach that can transform education. In the podcast, the Principal, Colin Northmore, discusses the key principles and strategies of mastery learning, and how it can unlock a student’s full potential.
Unleashing Potential through Mastery Learning:
Mastery learning is an age-old concept that has stood the test of time. It empowers educators to guide students towards a profound understanding of subjects and concepts like a master blacksmith mentoring his apprentices. At Evolve Online, we wholeheartedly embrace the power of mastery learning, making it an integral part of our educational model. Colin says, “Mastery learning is, in fact, the one thing that easily distinguishes us from a more traditional approach to teaching and learning. We follow a model developed at MIT (the Massachusetts Institute of Technology) called Crosslinks; it was developed by the Aeronautical Engineering faculty because the Dean of that faculty felt that you could not send students out into the world to build rockets if they only learned half of the work.”
Breaking Down the Curriculum:
To witness how mastery learning is put into action, we can observe how foundation phase teachers instruct young children. These educators are often highly skilled in mastery learning techniques. However, when it comes to achieving mastery at higher grade levels, a different mindset is needed. It requires a distinct method of teaching and learning, and most importantly, assessing students in the classroom. We need to take a moment to explain how this process works and why Evolve Online has intentionally selected the mastery-based approach. It is worth noting that mastery learning is not a novel concept and has been implemented in various schools worldwide. What sets Evolve Online apart is our use of technology as the driving force behind this approach.
The Significance of Progression:
Progression lies at the heart of mastery learning. Through a thoughtfully designed progression map, students embark on a transformative journey from grade one to grade twelve. The map highlights the essential steps and skills they need to acquire along the way. While higher grade levels may offer more specialized learning opportunities, foundational subjects like mathematics and literacy form the bedrock for all future learning.
Personalised Pace:
Recognising that each student learns at their own unique pace is a fundamental aspect of our mastery-based approach. We provide teachers, students, and parents with a comprehensive pacing guide, outlining the recommended speed at which students should progress through the curriculum. By allowing students to advance at their own deliberate pace, we ensure they truly comprehend each concept before moving forward.
Assessment for Mastery:
Assessment is a vital component of mastery learning, serving as a tool for students to demonstrate their understanding. Unlike traditional methods that rely solely on one-time tests, a mastery approach provides multiple opportunities for students to display their knowledge and skills. We believe that mastery is a continuous process, and students can improve and refine their abilities through regular feedback and revision.
Encouraging Creativity in Teaching:
Contrary to widely held belief, mastery learning does not stifle a teacher's creativity. On the contrary, it empowers educators to find innovative ways to engage students and facilitate deep understanding. Once the curriculum map is in place, teachers are encouraged to tap into their creativity to personalise the learning experience and help students grasp concepts more effectively.
Conclusion:
At Evolve Online, we passionately believe in the transformative power of mastery learning to unlock the true potential of students. By breaking down the curriculum, emphasising progression, personalising the pace, and encouraging creativity in teaching, we create an environment where students can thrive and unleash their full potential. Through continuous assessment and constructive feedback, students are empowered to reach new heights of mastery, establishing a solid foundation for lifelong learning.
