Exploring the Diverse Subject Offerings at Evolve Online School

Introduction:

In this blog post, we will delve into the various subject offerings at Evolve Online School, as discussed by Colin Northmore, the school's principal, in our latest podcast. Evolve Online is revolutionising education through its innovative approach, and we will explore how it caters to the diverse needs of students and schools. Evolve Online is reshaping the educational landscape, focusing on project-based learning and examination preparation.

Adapting to the Online Space:

Colin Northmore, drawing on his 19 years of experience as a principal, highlights the challenges traditional brick-and-mortar schools face. One significant issue revolves around maintaining economically viable subject offerings based on student demand. However, Evolve Online takes a different approach, leveraging the flexibility of online education. By hiring expert teachers on a class-by-class basis, the school ensures efficiency while providing students with highly qualified educators. Colin explains, "We wanted to have expert teachers, experienced teachers recognised within their subject as leaders and experts in that space."

Collaboration between Brick-and-Mortar and Evolve Online:

Colin emphasises the potential benefits of collaboration between brick-and-mortar schools and Evolve Online. This partnership allows traditional schools to expand their subject offerings and enhance efficiency. By utilising Evolve Online's expertise, schools can offer specialised subjects, even if only a few students are interested. Colin proposes a mutually beneficial arrangement: "It may be possible for a school to collaborate with Evolve Online, where the teacher is available to us during their regular school hours to take one of our classes at that time." This approach benefits the schools and allows teachers to focus on their passion, increasing job satisfaction. The school would be able to subsidise the cost of that teacher’s salary by selling their time to Evolve Online.

Expanding Opportunities:

Evolve Online presents three models for schools and students to utilise its offerings. Firstly, schools can collaborate to transfer entire classes to Evolve Online, ensuring their students receive a high-quality education in subjects where their school lacks expertise. Secondly, ambitious students can explore additional subjects beyond the required curriculum by enrolling in Evolve Online courses. Lastly, schools located in remote areas or lacking specialised teachers can partner with Evolve Online to offer subjects like drama or visual arts. This expands opportunities for students who would otherwise miss out on these enriching experiences.

Embracing Online Learning's Advantages:

The online space offers unique advantages for students at Evolve Online. Smaller class sizes become financially viable, and students from various locations can come together to form cohesive classes. This diversity promotes rich interactions and cultural exchanges among students, particularly for those residing in small towns or remote areas. Moreover, Evolve Online is exploring partnerships with NGOs and social justice movements to provide education to underserved regions, thus fostering social equity.

A Future-Oriented Approach:

Colin stresses the importance of embracing new teaching methods and rethinking curriculum delivery. With easy access to information through technology, the focus should shift towards teaching transferable skills rather than content memorisation. Evolve Online's mastery learning and integrated subject approaches lay the foundation for future success by equipping students with the necessary skills.

Conclusion:

Evolve Online School, under the guidance of Principal Colin Northmore, stands at the forefront of educational innovation. Evolve Online creates a dynamic and inclusive educational environment by offering a wide range of subjects, collaborating with brick-and-mortar schools, and embracing the advantages of online learning. As we look towards the future, schools must adapt and prepare students for the challenges and opportunities. Evolve Online is a shining example of how education can evolve to meet the needs of a changing world.

At Evolve Online, we did a deep dive into: “What does it really take to succeed in an online IEB school?” I recently sat down with one of our stellar Grade 12 students of 2025 and his family. Their insights provided a window into the inner workings of success in an online academic setting. While there is no magical formula for success, what stood out were the core elements of mindset, discipline, structure, and support working harmoniously. Here are the key takeaways from our conversation with this high-achieving Evolve Online family. 1. Success Starts with Self-Discipline and Ownership A recurring theme in our discussion was the importance of self-discipline in online learning. Top achievers at Evolve Online take charge by: Paying attention to instructions Keeping track of deadlines Being proactive in preparing for assessments Taking ownership of their learning journey The key message? Online learning thrives on responsibility. Students who proactively engage and take the lead excel. 2. Technology Is Key when studying: Technology Access = Freedom for studying Our top achievers emphasised the necessity of reliable technology Investing in high-quality laptops Ensuring stable internet connectivity, not one but two Internet providers are used as a backup to eliminate wi-fi issues. Having backup power solutions in place Their rationale was simple: Smooth technology leads to focused learning. By eliminating technical obstacles, students can concentrate on their studies with confidence, join their live online classes and interact with their teachers through Teams seamlessly without delay or disruption. 3. Use Past Papers Wisely A successful technique was their strategic use of past exam papers. Top performers: Leaned heavily on past IEB papers for study Emphasised practice over rote memorisation Mastered exam techniques and time management Built stamina through realistic practice scenarios While textbooks remain valuable, AI-powered educational platforms and mainly past papers are the real teachers, guiding students on how to think, write, and succeed in exams. The top achiever completed over 30 past papers! 4. Motivation and Support Go Hand in Hand Intrinsic motivation was a common trait among high achievers. While support is crucial, students must be driven by personal desire to succeed. Parents cited the importance of assessing: Availability for supervision Readiness for independent learning Need for additional support A balanced support structure, combined with personal effort, creates an environment where students can flourish. 5. Quality Teaching Makes a Difference Students highlighted the impact of their teachers at Evolve Online who: Provided constructive feedback Offered extra revision sessions Were accessible during assessments Maintained consistent standards across subjects Subjects such as Afrikaans and Accounting thrived with additional support and clear communication. Quality teaching remains paramount, whether in-person or online. 6. Balance for Sustainability Success is not just about academics. Students spoke of the importance of: Balancing studies with hobbies Knowing when to take breaks Developing time-management skills beyond school Maintaining balance prevents burnout and supports long-term academic consistency, especially in the demanding Grade 12 year. Perhaps the most powerful reminder from this discussion is that our greatest insights come directly from those living the experience. Listening to students and their families reflect honestly on what helped them succeed and where they struggled allows us to refine our practice with clarity and purpose. As we continue to evolve, these voices guide us toward stronger systems, better support, and a learning environment that truly prepares students not just for exams, but for life beyond school.
