Teachers

At Evolve Online School, our Teachers are seasoned educators who take special care to help your child succeed.

Our Teachers are qualified educators who take special care to make sure that your child progresses through their education journey. During the Foundation Phase we practice ‘looping’. This means that the same activators will stay with your child for more than one year to facilitate a deeper relationship and understanding of their unique needs.

We use a tailored approach to make sure that your child develops mastery at their own pace. By not feeling rushed to keep up with the rest of the class, and not feeling bored or held back when they are keen to move faster, we give your child the chance to claim their ground through their own achievements and reduce the anxiety associated with the usual one-size-fits-all model of schooling.

Synchronous & Asynchronous Approach

Evolve Online School uses a balance of Synchronous and Asynchronous learning to give your child a unique learning experience.

Synchronous learning consists of scheduled live online classes that your child will need to attend. While Asynchronous learning allows the child to develop mastery over topics at their own pace.

Foundation Phase (Grade R-3)

Empowering students through Digital Mastery

Our foundation phase is for students from Grade R to 3. We understand how important this phase is in laying the basics for all future learning. Our phased approach allows for time to be spent on any topics or subjects your child might be struggling with and also lets them explore and quickly progress in areas of interest and natural ability.

Intermediate Phase (Grade 4-6)

Students in the Intermediate Phase of primary school continue to develop their Literacy, Digital and Mathematical mastery. They also start a new subject called IDEAS.

Students from Grades 4 to 6 fall within the Intermediate phase of primary school. Our tailored approach to online primary schooling allows students to spend time on subjects they struggle with, and master topics faster in areas of interest and natural ability.

Senior Phase (Grade 7-9)

Senior Phase students continue with the same subjects in high school as they did in Intermediate Phase, but with a greater emphasis on using what they absorbed in Primary school to become independent learners.

Students from Grades 7 to 9 fall within the senior phase. Our tailored approach allows students to spend time on subjects they struggle, and progress faster in areas of interest and natural ability.

FET Phase
(Grade 10-12)

We don't believe that a child should measure their self-worth and accomplishments against artificial conventions.

Therefore we allow our Evolvees to work at their own pace at a level they are comfortable with to give your child the opportunity to claim their ground through their own achievements.

Cambridge Curriculum

Upper Primary

Ages 8 to 11 (Grades/Stage 4 to 6)

Cambridge Primary starts learners on an exciting educational journey. Typically for 5 to 11 year olds, it provides a strong foundation for students at the beginning of their schooling before progressing through the Cambridge Pathway in an age-appropriate way.

DIGITAL MASTERY

Social interaction and collaborative learning

Social interaction is not only important in developing your child's social skills, but it is crucial to their academic development as well. As students progress through different grades, they will need to work with peers and collaborate to master topics. This is part of our systematic approach to prepare them for higher levels of learning and life after matriculation. Collaboration is a natural requirement for adults in their careers, yet few schools explicitly teach collaboration skills. Evolve Online students are taught these skills and given the opportunity to improve them each time they work on collaborative tasks. These skills are also a part of our skills curriculum map and are reported on. Additionally, there are several exciting social opportunities your child can look forward to. We plan Day Camps, Studios, and Academies that will take place on selected dates and in different locations, where your child can come and spend the day with other Evolve Online students in a fun and directed manner.

The role of the learning teacher

A learning teacher differs from a traditional teacher because they focus more on the quality of their students’ mastery of topics than on getting through a curriculum. They look at the impact of the learning and use data, listening, judgement and expertise to ensure that every student is engaged and takes responsibility for their own learning. Your child’s learning teacher is a qualified and knowledgeable teacher who will assist and advise you in the educational journey of your child. The teacher monitors progression and intervenes if students are not attending synchronous sessions or falling behind by not following a regular schedule. They provide a framework of exactly what needs to be done and will mainly be responsible for assessing your child’s mastery of Topics and Items.

The role of the learning coach

While you are your child’s most important coach, we also have appointed learning coaches who help your child navigate life. They focus on digital mastery, social and emotional learning and teaching students to learn how to learn. Your child is paired with another child and their learning coach will facilitate discussions and teach learning and social skills. Our learning coaches also play an important role when interacting with students at our day camps.

Assessment

Assessment takes place continuously and in various ways.

Your child's educational progress is tracked via Blackboard Ultra, with AI assistance as needed. Our dedicated teachers are readily available to address issues and offer additional support. They keep you informed through regular communication, provide consultation hours for discussions, and ensure that your child's proficiency is in line with the CAPS curriculum. Furthermore, students can opt to sit for either IEB or Cambridge exit exams.

Books and apps

Through our strategic partnership with iStore education, the educational arm of the preferred distributors of Apple in South Africa, we ensure your child receives all the required e-books and apps assigned to them during their learning journey.

There will be times when a child may want to use a novel of their own to complete the tasks of English. This is encouraged and will be achieved in consultation with their Literacy Learning Teacher. We encourage parents to consider a Kindle unlimited or a Scribd account for your child to be able to access over 360 000 books from a modest monthly fee. Evolve Online will also have a library for students accessible through their learning app.
